B-754 The Pride of Sherwood has been on station at Beaumaris in Wales since the 22nd September 2004. In that time the boat and crew have been extremely busy. Below is a comprehensive list of the call outs she made while on station, supplied by
John Broughton, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Beaumaris.
25/09/04 CAERNARFON BAY , Wind S/W8
Holyhead Coastguard received a "Mayday" call from a yacht taking in water. When the Lifeboat arrived on scene they found another boat nearby was assisting the
casualty. The Lifeboat accompanied them both safely to shore.
28/09/04 PORT DINORWIC, Wind S/W2
A 999 call was received to say a person was in the water clinging to a dinghy 8:45 pm.
The person had been rowing an inflatable dinghy to his yacht when it de-flated. The Lifeboat was recalled when it reached Menai ridge as the casualty had been helped ashore by a person nearby.
06/10/04 PENMON, Wind S/W3
Moelfre Lifeboat asked for the assistance of Beaumaris Lifeboat to take over the tow of a yacht they had assisted with a fouled propeller. The tow was taken over at the Northern entrance of the Straits and the vessel towed to a mooring in Beaumaris Bay so that the propeller could be freed at low tide.
08/10/04 PUFFIN ISLAND , Wind E3
Holyhead Coastguard requested Lifeboat assistance to a fishing boat which had reported
a problem with starting the engine. Shortly after launching he resolved the problem and the Lifeboat was recalled.
09/10/04 NORTH PUFFIN ISLAND , Wind E 5
Assistance was called for via a mobile phone to a yacht with 5 people on board North of Puffin Island. It was reported that four of the crew were seasick or hyperthermic due to the
poor weather conditions.When the lifeboat arrived on scene the helmsman decided to ask for the assistance of Moelfre Lifeboat as the casualties needed to be landed ashore for
medical attention. Beaumaris Lifeboat landed the casualties at Beaumaris where two of them were taken by ambulance to hospital and two were treated at the station.
09/10/04 Between B2 & B3, Wind E 5
Holyhead Coastguard requested Beaumaris Lifeboat take over the tow of the Yacht (above) from Moelfre Lifeboat. The tow was transferred between B2 & B3.and taken to a
mooring in Beaumaris Bay . The one crew on the yacht and all the crews gear was taken ashore. The Coastguard then took three of the crew to Conwy to pick up their car. The two casualties in hospital were expected to be discharged later.
12/10/04 MENAI BRIDGE , Wind S/W 2 11pm. Lifeboat assistance was called for to a person threatening to jump from the chains of the Menai Suspension bridge . Beaumaris Lifeboat as is normal on these occasions stood off near Menai Bridge Pier in case their services were needed. After about 30 minutes this person came down a firemans ladder where he was apprehended by the Police.
17/10/04 PENMON, Wind N/W 2
Lifeboat assistance requested to search for a person believed to be missing since the
previous evening. An extensive search of the Menai Straits and around Dinmor Quarry by Lifeboat, Helicopter and Coastguards was conducted without result. The Lifeboat and Helicopter were stood down leaving the Coastguards to search the shores.
17/10/04 DINMOR, Wind N/W 4
Holyhead Coastguard again requested assistance to investigate a report by Coastguard mobiles who had made a sighting of an object in the water believed to be the missing person. When the Lifeboat arrived on scene this was confirmed but because of the swell and the close proximity of the rocks the Lifeboat was unable to get gain access to the body. The Rescue Helicopter was tasked who then retrieved the casualty and flew it to Bangor Hospital.
21/10/09 PUFFIN ISLAND , Wind S/W 7/9 One of 4 canoeists managed to reach Penmon Beach and call for assistance via his mobile phone. 3 other canoeists were unable to leave Puffin Island where they had landed in adverse conditions. Beaumaris Lifeboat arrived on scene and evacuated the canoeists and their canoes individually to Penmon Beach where they were assisted by Bangor Coastguards.
24/10/04 TRE-CASTELL, Wind S/W 6
Holyhead Coastguard requested assistance to a 38 ft. Yacht with 3 people on board with engine failure and a dragging anchor. Beaumaris Lifeboat put two crew members aboard to assist. Shortly after this vessel was able to restart his engine and the Lifeboat escorted them to a safe mooring in Beaumaris. The Yacht's crew were taken off to await a better weather forecast.
02/11/04 PORT DINORWIC, Wind E 4 Holyhead Coastguard requested lifeboat assistance to a small fishing boat with engine failure and reported to be drifting off Port Dinorwic. When the lifeboat arrived at the casualties position the fishing boat's crew had fixed the problem and did not require further assistance.
03/11/04 PUFFIN ISLAND , Wind S/W 3 Holyhead Coastguard received a request for assistance from the RSPCA who had a report of a seal trapped in a fishing net near Puffin Island . The RSPCA Inspector was taken out and the seal was located on rocks at the north end of the Island . Another Inspector with a firearm was picked up from the beach at Penmon as it was feared that the seal would need to be put down but with the help of the lifeboat crew the Inspector was able to cut free the net from the seals mouth and neck. Although the seal had deep cuts it was released.
