John Pepper who has had both his hips replaced took up swimming for exercise on medical advice, unable to swim ‘freestyle’ he joined the Southwell Swimming Club to learn. Using fins – as he kept sinking to the bottom as he could not move his legs quickly enough. With coaching and encouragement from coaches Paul Klein and Shirley Grayson he eventually, after 18 months or so, managed to swim about 14 to 18 lengths.
He completed the mile challenge (66 lengths) in three sessions, in actual fact he did 70 lengths, in 35 minute sessions without stopping.
The final total of money raised was an amazing £775. The photographs show John with the coaches at Southwell on completion of his swim and of Barrie Judge, Chairman of the Nottingham Branch of the R.N.L.I. presenting John with a certificate of achievement in exchange for the cheque.
John wishes to thank everyone who sponsored and supported him..
